Originally designed to be a legislative chamber, the first stone of the Monumento a la Revolución (Monument to the Revolution) on Plaza de la República was laid in 1910 during the centennial celebrations of Independence. Political upheaval, civil unrest and the assisnantion in 1913 of the new President - Francisco I. Madero, saw the project cancelled and abandoned for more than twenty years, after which works recommenced and subsequently completed in 1938.

Not to be confused with the War of Independence, who's heroes are interned at the nearby El Ángel de la Independencia (The Angel of Independence), but during the final years of the structures construction, it was modified to serve as a mausoleum for the heroes of the Mexican Revolution of 1910 - Francisco "Pancho" Villa, Plutarco Elías Calles, Venustiano Carranza, Lázaro Cárdenas and the aforementioned Francisco I. Madero.
