DAY 48

Week 7

LIUZHOU (Guangxi, CHN) to YANGSHUO (Guangxi, CHN)

Wednesday August 23rd, 2017

TODAYS MILEAGE – 117 miles or 188 kilometres
TRIP MILEAGE – 36,563 miles or 58,842 kilometres

Our overnight train journey from "Yichang East Railway Station" arrived at the "Liujiang Railway Station" (located in Labao Town, on the outskirts of Liuzhou) around 5:30 in the morning. We were met by a mini-van service, which delivered us to our accommodations at the "Yangshuo New Century" hotel in around 3 hours.

We all walked into the centre of Yangshuo for the orientation walk, then basically headed off to all do our own things for the afternoon. After talking to a couple of ex-pats that I had ran into, I decided on a steak sandwich at "The Brew" for lunch, before catching up with Rob and then wandering around the markets, side streets & thoroughfares.

After freshening up back at the hotel, Rob and I walked back down to the markets, which had picked up considerably in foot traffic since the afternoon. We ate at the local German "Zur Eiche" restaurant, where the food was so - so, but the beer was cold and the people watching from the balcony kind of made up for it. From there we pulled up a stump at a brand-new bar, in one of the many back alleys, that was owned and operated by a Dutch fella and his local girlfriend. We ended up staying a few hours just chin wagging with them and the ex-pats who trickled in and out during the evening.

Day 18 - Liuzhou to Yangshuo
Settle in and scan the scenery from the convenience of a private vehicle and drive to Yangshuo, a backpacker town set amongst the picture-perfect limestone karsts by the Li River. Opt to try a cooking class, practice tai chi or see the Light and Sound show produced by Zhang Yimou.
Arrive in Liuzhou early in the morning and travel to the small countryside town of Yangshuo, where the Li River winds its way around thousands of limestone karst mountains. Every turn in the road brings you to another picture-postcard sight.
Here, there are so many activities to choose from-- bamboo rafting, rock climbing, hiking, acupuncture and traditional massage, the Light and Sound Show, calligraphy lessons, tai chi, or a countryside cooking class.
This backpacker town is full of things to do and see. An orientation walk will get you situated and help you make the most of your time in this idyllic location.
