DAY 12

Week 2

DARWIN (Northern Territory, AUS) to ALICE SPRINGS ~ Westies Sporting Club (Northern Territory, AUS)

Monday October 8, 1990

TODAYS MILEAGE – 941 miles or 1514 kilometres
TRIP MILEAGE – 4272 miles or 6875 kilometres

After a couple of nights at Fluxy's aunt & uncles - Del & Bruce, we got back on the road and were headed home. Both Fluxy and I decided to take it easy on the way home, but I was wondering how long that notion would last. Be Happy

Another pre-dawn start in which I took the first shift behind the wheel as Fluxy snored his box off in the navigators seat. We grabbed a quick bite of breakfast in Katherine before I pulled up at Mataranka Homestead for a stretch of the legs and a refreshing dip in the thermal pools.

Fluxy took second shift in the pilots seat and we were making pretty good time on the road without pushing the vehicle or ourselves too hard by sitting on 100 mile an hour (160 kph) for the most part.

We got into Tennent Creek (or TFC ... as in Tennant Farqin Creek as I know it) a bit after 1 o'clock and after a feed and fuelling up we happen to see a mate of ours, big Jeffery Miller walking down the street with a suitcase in his hand. I pull over we what he's up to. He's headed to the Greyhound bus station to get a ticket to the Alice - jump in mate, we're headed there nnow, no dramas at all.

All three of us head out of "TFC" around 1:30pm and I've decided to put my foot into the V6 Commodore as I don't want to be driving through the hills north of the Alice at dusk with all the cattle an kangaroos that freely roam around there. We were back to bending the speedo needle at 220 KPH (136 MPH) and Fluxy points back to Big Geoffrey who in the back seat reading a Australasian Post magazine - upside down ... what's up with that???

Big Jeffrey asks us to pull up for a minute in Ti Tree so that he could call the missus. I top off the fuel while he calling the bride and we're back on the road. We ask Jeffrey if everything’s OK and he says no dramas. He said he rang the missus to have here change his cardiology appointment as he's driving home with these two lunatics at warp speed and his doctor may keep him in hospital as his pulse would be a bit elevated at this juncture. He then goes on to say "keep ya foot into it though". Be Happy

We were parked up at the Westies Club having a beer and a bite to eat around 6PM when Big Jeffery's bride walks in and looks at both Fluxy and myself and says "I should have known it was you pair of ratbags" and had a good giggle. Be Happy
