DAY 62f

Week 9

MANUEL ANTONIO ~ El Avión Restaurant & Bar (Puntarenas, CRI)

Wednesday May 15th, 2019

TODAYS MILEAGE – 185 miles / 298 kilometres
TRIP MILEAGE – 21,753 miles / 35,008 kilometres

After having passed the unique architecture of El Avión Restaurant & Bar and checking out a few web-based reviews, Lila and I decided to head back to see if we could catch a sunset and a feed.

The El Avion restaurant is easily recognisable by the Fairchild C-123 Provider that takes up most of the site and this particular aircraft has a chequered history of its own, as it was one of two purchased by the CIA in the 80's and to run "freight" during the Iran-Contra Affair.

Abandoned at the International Airport in San José, then purchased for $3,000 USD in 2000 by the proprietors of the Avión, the plane was disassembled and because the fuselage was too wide for the Costa Rica's infamous Chiquita Banana railroad bridges, all seven sections had to be sent on an ocean ferry and then hauled up Manuel Antonio hill to its current cliff-side resting-place.

You'll be pleased to know that we weren’t disappointed, as we had both a brilliant sunset and an equally great meal. Be Happy
