DAY 39b

LINTONG ~ Terracotta Army: Pit 1 (Shaanxi, CHN)

Monday August 14th, 2017

TODAYS MILEAGE – 500 miles or 805 kilometres
TRIP MILEAGE – 34,470 miles or 55,474 kilometres

At 756 feet (230 metres) long, 204 feet (62 metres) wide, 15 to 21 feet (4.5 - 6.5 metres) deep and with just over 3.5 acres (14,260 m²) under roof, Terracotta Warriors Pit 1 is the largest pit in the burial grounds of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of the first unified dynasty of Imperial China.

This pit was discovered by local villagers in March 1974 and comprises over 6,000 life-like & life-sized terracotta warriors and horses including infantry, cavalry and chariot warriors all arranged in a battle formation.

As attractions go, it was an impressive sight, but the experience was soured somewhat by the shear amount of people pushing/shoving/jostling for position in the hot & humid building. It's one of the few places in all of my travels that I did not enjoy, simply because it was "too popular".
