DAY 4

Week 1

LISBON (Lisboa, PRT)

Monday July 10th, 2017

TODAYS MILEAGE – 12 miles or 19 kilometres
TRIP MILEAGE – 12,500 miles or 20,117 kilometres

As a group, we headed off on foot to walk both the Funicular Gloria and Funicular Bica tracks, before stopping for lunch at the Time Out Markets.

From there it was a short 20 minute tram ride out to the Belém area to sample some of the local delicacies at Pastéis de Belém. This included some of thier world renowned petite baked Portuguese custard tarts. I did try a couple of thier meat pies, but they didn't come within a bulls roar of an Aussie maggot bag.

We took the short walk around the corner to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Mosteiro da Santa Maria de Belém (Jerónimos Monastery), then across the road to Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Monument to the Discoveries) and the adjacent Torre de Belém (Belém Tower).

We grabbed a tram back to Praça do Comércio (the Palace Yard), where a couple of us more adventurous types haggled hard for a tuk-tuk ride up to Castelo de São Jorge (São Jorge Castle). I was more that happy to spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the landmark which overlooks the city.

To round off the day, a few of us went out and dined with the locals in one of the numerous back street eateries, that also had plenty of ice cold Portuguese cervejas (beers). Be Happy

Orientation walk of Lisbon. Wander through the distinct city quarters and the historical area of Belém. Enjoy a morning CEO-led orientation walk of central Lisbon. After, explore the city with some free time.
The Alfama is one of the oldest quarters in Lisbon, and is well worth a visit as well as the area of Belém, where the famous navigators set sail to discover the world.
Orientation Walk - 30m-1h: Enjoy a brief walk with your CEO, who will give you some tips on finding things like supermarkets, main squares, and ATMs. For more specific or in-depth information, an official guided tour is recommended.
Belém District Visit - 1h-2h30m: Discover Belém, a western suburb that's linked to Portugal’s Golden Age of Discoveries – it was the site where famous navigators once set sail to discover the world. While there, take some time to tour other nearby must-see attractions: Estrela Prazeres, Estrela Gardens, Estrela Basilica, Mouraria Castelo, and the Church of Senhora da Sade, which boasts beautiful tiles and a carved wood altar.
