Hohenschwangau, Germany SEPT 1998
Could this be my European retirement villa? A little snow in winter and a little sun in summer will do me just fine.
Hohenschwangau, Germany SEPT 1998
Most of the towns we passed through had these huge maypoles in the center of town. Notice all the flower boxes on the house.
Hohenschwangau, Germany SEPT 1998
You had new developments across the street from century old dwellings. Call me crazy, but why didn't they try and include the old architecture and buildings into the new town plans?.
Hohenschwangau, Germany SEPT 1998
Hohenschwangau, now try saying that with a mouth full of marbles! See that little white place on the hill?
Hohenschwangau, Germany SEPT 1998
This was the palace of King Ludwig, later to be known as Mad King Ludwig due to his excessive spending on building castles.
Hohenschwangau, Germany SEPT 1998
An impressive sight to behold, so impressive that a young Walt Disney used the castle as the model for his Disneyland theme park in Anaheim, California.
Hohenschwangau, Germany SEPT 1998
We were only half way up the steep climb to the castle.
Hohenschwangau, Germany SEPT 1998
Welcome to Schloss Neuschwanstein.
Hohenschwangau, Germany SEPT 1998
As we were one of the last people to turn up for the day, we basically had the castle of Schloss Neuschwanstein to ourselves.
Hohenschwangau, Germany SEPT 1998
The little footbridge was used for hunting parties and so forth, it's now used for hikers and hanglider pilots wanting to get to the top of the mountain range.
Hohenschwangau, Germany SEPT 1998
As you can see the weather was rolling in (again), so we didn't make it over to the bridge.
Hohenschwangau, Germany SEPT 1998
At one time, for as far as the eye could see, was King Ludwig's farm land .
Hohenschwangau, Germany SEPT 1998
The yellow castle was built for King Ludwig's wife and was called the Royal Castle of Hohenschwangau.
Hohenschwangau, Germany SEPT 1998
What a million dollar view.
Hohenschwangau, Germany SEPT 1998
The best place to photograph the "wife's" castle (Hohenschwangau) from was the window in the men's toilet. We kid you not.
Hohenschwangau, Germany SEPT 1998
The "wife's" castle form our hotel room balcony.
Hohenschwangau, Germany SEPT 1998
Yeah right, how were we to know that the sign said no cuddling allowed in public?
Hohenschwangau, Germany SEPT 1998
Now how would you like this view outside your bedroom window? King Ludwig did. King Ludwig was not into conquering, raping or pillaging. He liked to build castles.
Hohenschwangau, Germany SEPT 1998
Next to Fitzy's boot is a slug. It looks pretty healthy to me.
Hohenschwangau, Germany SEPT 1998
Our pension/hotel we spent the night in, located near the base of Schloss Neuschwanstein.
Hohenschwangau, Germany SEPT 1998
A pretty basic room, great views, no bathroom. But beggars can't be choosers considering some of the dives we stayed in!
Hohenschwangau, Germany SEPT 1998
Here's a good one. An Aussie in a Chinese restaurant in Germany asking for directions with an English map and the only language spoken is fluent German and Chinese. We could have ended up in South Africa.
Hohenschwangau, Germany SEPT 1998
Time to bid Hohenschwangau and Schloss Neuschwanstein. Hang on, isn't that yet another rain storm erupting.
